When will iPad 2, the successor to the greatest Tablet on earth going to be launched by Appple?

The best predictions we have seen is that the iPad 2 will be released either the first or second Saturday in April.

This seems consistent with the pattern has displayed with its other two winning consumer devices, the iPod and iPhone which traditionally have a one year product cycle

Blogger have extensively speculated about the release date and also about other features that the new iPad II will have. Some of the potential changes and additions include:

• A New Carbon Body Material to Replace Aluminum
• RFID/NFC to Replace Bluetooth
• A 7″ Screen Version
• New 2048 x 1536 Super High Resolution Retina Display Using “Pixel Doubling”
• A  128 GB Storage Version

The 7-inch Galaxy Tab was first released in Italy in mid-October, challenging the global dominance of Apple Inc.’s 9.7-inch iPad. Apple has sold about 7.5 million iPad units globally since its April launch, brushing off scepticism that tablet PCs would not fill the gap between smartphones and computers.

Dell Convertible Duo Tablet Laptop Review on Tom’s Hardware

Here is a snip from the review:

“The whole feel can be best described as a rubberized coating an aluminum shell,” Andrew says. “The keyboard is surrounded by what feels like a carbon fiber composite that gives the look but not the feel of the brushed aluminum. The touchpad is integrated, but honestly, we didn’t spend enough time playing with it in PC mode to give a thumbs up or no.”

CNET says Update: Dell ‘Duo’ hybrid tablet imminent

According to the story

Originally, version 3.0 of Android was set to be Gingerbread. Now it appears the forthcoming version 2.3 for phones will be called Gingerbread, and version 3.0 will be Honeycomb. Gingerbread is expected any day now.

Other tablets expected to run Honeycomb include the forthcoming LG Optimus Pad. Although there’s a raft of Android tablets imminent, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab is in shops this month, China’s largest computer manufacturer Lenovo has specifically said it won’t release its LePad tablet in the US until a tablet-specific Android arrives.

The reviewers at PC Mag are saying that the Tab by Samsung is a hot competitor of the world’s champ of multitouch tablets, the Apple iPod.

Gary Kovacs pens (or touches?) a fantastic new article that both traces the history of tablet pcs as well as why the tablet computer, after 20 years of failure will now succeed. Here is an excerpt:

So why are tablets set to finally succeed when they have failed so many times in the past? The first reason is technical. Their imaginations fired by sci-fi movies, tablet designers dreamed of creating fast, compact devices that responded to the touch of a finger.

The second reason why tablets are ready is related to business: mobile apps are a proven, profitable industry. The iPhone has 225,000 apps, Google’s Android has 100,000. These apps can be quickly brought over from smartphone to tablet with minimal rewriting. That makes tablets immediately attractive to potential buyers. Contrast that with Windows Tablet XP, which had plenty of non-touch apps but never attracted a large ecosystem of touch-capable developers.

Here is how the report begins:

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first Android tablet I can take seriously. It’s well-built, elegant, and fast. No, Android 2.2 doesn’t fit as perfectly onto a tablet as Apple’s iOS does. But at the right price, this may provide the first real challenge Apple has had in the U.S. tablet market.

I received a few minutes with the Galaxy Tab at its launch event Thursday, and I was impressed with its performance. The hardware feels solid and comfortable to hold. The edges are a bit squarish, the corners are rounded, and the metal back is smooth. At 13 ounces, it didn’t bend my wrist, at least in the short time I got to use it.

In a related piece by the same author, it was announced that all four major US cellular carriers would offer the new tablet. Also some specs were published:

The Galaxy Tab was first announced two weeks ago in Europe, and the U.S. models share many features with its foreign cousin. All the Galaxy Tabs are Android 2.2-powered, touch-screen tablets with 7-inch, 1024-by-600 screens. They connect to the Internet with 3G and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (but not Sprint’s 4G network.)

Inside, a 1-GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor hums away. The devices are 12 millimeters thick and weigh 13 ounces, considerably less than the iPad. The Tab has two cameras, a 3-megapixel one on the back and a 1.3-megapixel one on the front for video calling. Sprint’s and Verizon’s versions have 2GB of internal memory, while AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s have 16GB. There’s also a MicroSD card slot that takes 32GB cards, and Sprint and Verizon are including a 16GB card. The U.S. Tab won’t make standard cellular voice calls.

The mandatory 3G service will be for data, VoIP, and video calling. Samsung didn’t say whether the Verizon model will come with that carrier’s proprietary Skype app, which would turn it into a phone, but all four models will have Bluetooth capabilities to work with voice headsets.
